The process of gaining entry to a UK university will differ for those who study in the UK and those whose education has been undertaken abroad. For top-tier selective universities, it is highly desirable that the student is studying for A-Level or IB certificate.

AT WHAT AGE DO STUDENTS START AT UNIVERSITY?

Generally an applicant should be at least 18 years of age on admission to a University, there is no upper age limit.

ARE ALL UNIVERSITIES OF EQUAL STATUS?

There are about 130 universities in the UK and within that number those who undertake scientific research are more highly regarded and subsequent employment opportunities are better than from others.

WHAT ARE THE STAGES OF QUALIFICATIONS IN THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM?

Bachelor’s degree which normally takes 3 years to complete, however with options to study abroad or on sandwich courses with work placement, certain courses may take 4-5 years to complete.

Master’s Degree – normally takes 12 months to complete.

PhD – can take a minimum of 3 years of studies, with an average of 7 years.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS OF GOING TO A UNIVERSITY IN THE UK AND ARE THERE GRANTS AVAILABLE?

Tuition fees in England for undergraduate students from the UK and EU for 2020-2021 entry are £9,250 per academic year. For International undergraduate students annual academic fees vary between £18,000 and £30,000 depending on the university. Different fees apply to EU students attending universities in Scotland. Grants are not widely available however, scholarships may be awarded on the basis of unique talent.

Publications such as Good university Guide or The Times provide accurate and comprehensive up to date statistics on courses.
